MM is a Joint Stock Engineering Company entirely controlled by the Municipality of Milan. Founded in 1955 to design and build the Milan Metro, it is now the leading Italian Company in civil and plant engineering sectors for urban and suburban rail transit networks.

In July 2003 the Municipality of Milan has put Metropolitana Milanese in charge of the Integrated Water Service.

In Milan MM has built the entire Metro System on a turn-key basis and so far this comprises three underground lines with a total length of 71 kilometres (42 miles) and 84 stations. Furthermore, MM has completed the engineering activities for the first section of the Milan Urban Railway Link running underground for a total length of 6 km (4 miles) with 4 stations and the first section of the Naples Metro Line 1, for a total of 13 km (8 miles) and 15 stations.

Over the years MM has broadened its field of interests and diversified its work and market areas, applying its know-how to other important cities, in Italy and abroad.

The Company offers in fact engineering services related to traffic and mobility planning, parking areas (both surface and underground), park-and-ride facilities, land use and urban renewal plans, architecture and restructuring of town areas, special buildings and structures, environmental engineering (air and water treatment, noise and air pollution monitoring and abatement).

MM also provides its expertise services covering the entire design process from general surveys and studies to preliminary, final and detailed designs.

It also provides the following services: Project & Construction Management, technical assistance, project control, bid appraisal, tender assessment, tests and start-up supervision; MM has been providing these services and know-how for the last fifty years, making them available to other bodies and public administrations.

Within the areas of its expertise, the Company delivers large turn-key projects to its customers, usually government agencies. Their complexity and financial relevance, call for experience in managing multidisciplinary activities.

MM is registered with the World Bank and with the major programs financed by the European Union.

MM’s headquarters are in Milan and its total personnel amounts to about 700 full-time employees (September, 2003).

The MM Quality System has been certified in the following fields: Design and Co-ordination Activities connected to urban and suburban metro, railway and tramway lines; traffic and mobility; parking areas and park-and-ride; plumbing, water supply and sewage systems; land renewal and reclamation; buildings; airports and special airports structures; Construction Process Management: Management, Co-ordination and Supervision of works; Activities related to Contracting for Works and Supplies in accordance with the provisions of the laws of the Italian Republic.

To ensure Quality for the remaining corporate activities, MM carries out its project-specific Quality Plans and procedures in compliance with the criteria of the Company Quality System.
