Health and safety

The question of health and safety in the workplace is a permanent Company commitment consisting in fully protecting health, safety, integrity and dignity of the person in his/her working environment, as required by the Italian Constitution and international standards.
Metropolitana Milanese supports safety and accident prevention culture by promoting activities and initiatives that encourage responsible conduct among employees. Beside protecting one's own safety, such conduct helps safeguard everyone else involved and/or in the vicinity. MM has the policy of actively and effectively reducing hazard at work, injury and professional illnesses.

Projects

In this context, two projects have been launched:

  1. the first, involving all Metropolitana Milanese personnel, promoting and developing a “total” safety-oriented culture consisting in training courses, instruction, and awareness campaigns. During 2010 5,010 work hours were dedicated to the safety training of a total of 833 participants.
  2. the second, for defining a Health and Safety Management System, has the objective of continuous improvement of safety levels across the entire organization. This project was designed following the principle of creating procedures for single activities with the goal of minimizing improvisation during work through preventive identification of safety hazards and their quick resolution.

Medical assistance

Another of our convictions is that protecting the health of workers cannot be separated from the off-duty sphere, to the advantage of all those involved. For this reason the Company health monitoring is not limited to a mere legal compliance but, if requested by the worker and deemed necessary by the Company physician, it may cover anything believed useful for the general wellbeing. We believe that this practice brings about tangible benefits to the employee, to the Company and to the society alike, especially in terms of reduction of absence from work.

Injuries

Workplace safety in Metropolitana Milanese is the central element of its activity. In 2009 there was a significant reduction (around 10 percent) of injuries, confirming the trend from 2008. Details are shown in the chart.

Reference indices

As can be seen from the charts, the reference indices for 2010 also show a frequency reduction of over 5,2 percent, of over 10,2 percent in incidence and 0,1percent in gravity.

  • The frequency index shows how frequently injuries occur: it is given by the ratio between the number of injuries occurring in a year and the hours worked, multiplied by 100,000.

  • The incidence index shows the incidence of injuries on the workforce used: it is given by the ratio between the number of injuries occurring in a year and the number of employees, multiplied by 1,000.

  • The gravity index defines the seriousness of injuries occurring during a period: it is given by the ratio between days of absence of employees due to injuries and the hours worked, multiplied by 1,000.
